Day 123

Staying In A Ghost Town

Sep 6, 2013, 10:44 AM

I'm not driving, I haven't driven much at all since starting this trip. Steve and I have gone almost everywhere together and he's been doing all the driving. The only time I drive is when we are hooking up the car to the back of the RV. It is going to be strange when we get home getting my driving groove back. I've never been one to drive for much more than two hours at a time anyway, I'm very happy being the passenger. It will be strange when we get home to get behind the wheel again.

This campground is a DUMP!!! I found it on line and called to make a reservation. We were only going to stay one night so I thought whatever. It's right where I need it to be, so I tried calling. I was told you can only get ahold of the reservations people till 3PM, but you can make reservations on line. Well I don't like to make reservations on line cause I want to speak with a person. I want to make sure the accommodations are what I really want that they can handle a larger motor home towing a car. If there are going to be any issues I want to know about it before we get there and we probably will find another place to stop. So I called again the next day, a little after 9AM. The reservation folks don't get in till 10, at this point I'm a little perturbed, but I didn't pay attention to my annoyance I called after 10. I spoke with some woman, she told me you really don't need reservations, we have plenty of spaces, over two hundred, it's first come first served, just come on in. Now, I'm going to go on record right now and say I should have known better. What was I thinking? We get here after a day of driving. The place is supposed to be a ghost town and it is. There is NOTHING around it. We drive up to the little booth as you come in. The girl in the booth tells us to just pick whatever site we want. Section A is probably what we want, it the "nicest" spots, they are full hook-ups and pull-throughs. She hands us paperwork and tells us a ranger will be by after 5:00 to collect the money (what?). So we drive up to the nice spots in Section A. They have obviously had a flash flood cause everything is washed out. They have been in here with heavy equipment trying to clear the rocks out. These sites are not really big enough for us, we have to unhook the car, it is a MESS!!!!! It is over 100 degrees here today and we are walking around trying to figure out which site we can try to fit in that hasn't had all the smaller gravel washed away and a mound of huge rocks to try to drive over. THIS IS PRECISELY WHY I LIKE TO SPEAK WITH SOMEONE!! Whatever, we are out of here in the morning.

Everyone have a good night, I'm sure the saga will continue tomorrow.
