Day 131

It's Not Legal

Sep 14, 2013, 5:39 PM

We started out today not really knowing where we were going or what we were going to find, and we had the BEST day. We drove east on 89 going in search of the Vermillion Cliffs and the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. Oh my gosh, we stopped at a historical marker, oh but I'm getting ahead of myself. Ok I have to slow down, but I have so many pictures in my head I want to get down. . .  We drove out of Kanab and the scenery became so iconically Old West. The red cliffs, the jagged rocks. It was so beautiful to see. The morning was perfect for pictures too, big fluffy clouds gave some visual interest to the sky and the landscape spoke for itself. We drove till I couldn't stand it anymore and I had to have Steve pull over so I could get pictures. I do try to hold myself in check, or we won't get out of the drive way half the time. We saw a pullout with a historical marker so we stopped. I got some shots and Steve read the signs. There was a dirt road that lead off this pullout. Steve said one of the signs said that there was a movie set about two miles down this road and an old west cemetery. He asked me if I wanted to go see it and of course I was game. So we drove down the road. It was gravel but nice and smooth, really pretty good for a gravel road, but then we have had some wicked rain in this area washing out roads and causing mudslides and alike. The road twists and turns and with each new turn the view got better and better, but the road got worse and worse. This car of ours deserves a medal for going above and beyond the call of duty. By the time we get home she is going to think she's a 4 wheel drive jeep. Between the washouts and the steep hills I don't know how we got out of there but it was so worth it. We went down a good three miles when we came to a couple cars on the side of the road parked. We thought they might just be checking out the cool scenery so we drove past them and then realized, they had stopped there because there was no more road to drive on. So Steve turned around, with great care, and we parked and got out to get pictures and look around. A bunch of people came back to their cars and told us they hadn't made it to the town. The one guy said he'd gone about a mile and a half and still didn't see the town, he did pass the cemetery, but it got really muddy and he came back. We weren't willing to walk that far just for mud, so we just took some photos there. It was so cool, there were only six of us even down here, it was so quiet and so strange looking. I loved it!!

After that we found a Bureau of Land Management office so we stopped for some information on the area. The ranger in there told us that so many of the roads and hiking trails were closed because of mud or washouts. She said it was the worst she'd seen and she's been working here for eight years. She also told us that the movie set had been flooded and burned, basically it's gone. From there we went to Page, Arizona. We had a really good lunch at a little place we found. We also found a brochure for the Lake Powell Resort & Marina's Antelope Canyon Cruise. It was a 90 minute boat ride on Lake Powell into Antelope Canyon. So we called and there was a cruise in an hour, PERFECT!!!!! We were only about ten minutes from the marina. It was so perfect. We got to see a beautiful lake and going into the canyon was so cool. It was narrow with steep rock walls and lots of turns. We had another great day, but then I'm coming to expect those. Coming home and getting back to real life is going to be very difficult, retirement is just wonderful.

Tomorrow, we are going to take it easy. Sleep late, maybe go to the Pink Coral Sand Dunes. That one is really close.
