Day 7

Callaway Gardens Here We Come
May 13, 2013, 11:13 AM

Today we are off to Callaway Gardens. There are biking and hiking trails. I've got my camera and we have loaded up the bikes, we did have to make a stop at Walmart because they require bike helmets. Oh my gosh this will be a laugh riot. We are going to look dorky, but hell nobody knows us here. So I'm sure this blog entry will be full of silly stories and pictures. I'll try to get one of Steve on his bike wearing his helmet. SHHhhhhhh don't tell him. He hates it when I take his picture, he thinks he looks like a dork, wait till I get one of him on his bike with a helmet on, I'm giggling already!!!!!

Getting There Is Half The Fun
May 13, 2013, 1:02 PM

So we have just been on one heck of a ride, thanks to modern technology (the GPS) we saw some rural Georgia roads. However it did enable us to find a nice little lunch place. Steve got their buffet and I had a burger and fries. It was the Kountry Kitchen in Lagrange Georgia. It was very good. The waitress knew everyone else by name. It's fun to go to little off the beaten path type places and let me tell you, this was off the beaten path.

Biking At Callaway Gardens
May 13, 2013, 4:43 PM

Callaway Gardens was a pretty place, of course there was another admission fee (oh my gosh people really, we are retired here). Anyway the gate off the road into the place was so pretty, then you wind through fields of wild flowers. Just gorgeous! They might want to spend a little money on signage though. You really have no idea where to go once you're in. They give you a map at the entrance where they extract their fee out of you, but that map is not so great or we really need to take a course on map reading. We finally just parked where they have bicycle rentals. We figured the bike paths would logically be near the bike rentals. We were right about that, yay us!! We wanted to play it smart, we know nothing about the terrain so we went to the kid renting the bikes to get some information. Once you start down a bike path are you committed to go the entire way (10 miles)? Are there different trails like at ski resorts, black diamond trails otherwise known as certain death, or bunny trails appropriate for toddlers and Steve and I? We didn't know so we needed answers. Well we needed even more answers when we were done talking to this kid. Yep, it's gonna be like that. Well we rode around for probably an hour. Steve would say to me "which way do you want to go?" I would answer, "oh I don't care, it's up to you." We'd get to the next fork in the road and Steve would say to me, "which way do you want to go?" My reply again, "I don't care, it's up to you." He would start off and I would stop him to go a different direction. Oh come on you saw that coming didn't you? What I really don't get is why he doesn't.
We spent at least a half hour in the Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center. We passed a mile 4 marker twice, but we never did see a mile 3 or mile 5 so I really have no idea how far we may have gone. So now let's put this in perspective. We drove 90 minutes to get there, spent $34 getting in and after 90 minutes we are totally DONE on the bikes and we are ready for a soda along side the lake and the 90 minute ride home. Oh I almost forgot, we did see a cute little log cabin and turtles in the lake (that makes it all better). WE ARE CRAZY!!!!!! But we had fun, we laughed, it was an adventure, and that is what this trip is all about. Now I think I'm going to snooze while Steve drives back to the campground.
Tomorrow we are on our way to Fort Bragg.
