Day 65

Waterfalls and Pictured Rocks

Jul 10, 2013, 11:58 AM

Today is going to be a big day. We are going on a sunset cruise to see the pictured rocks on Lake Superior and before that we are going to do some hiking and see waterfalls. I'm excited, this is something I've been waiting to do. Last night was quiet till about 3:30 AM, then the winds were so bad Steve had to go outside and put up the side awnings. We could feel the RV shaking. It was bad, but you know me, I fell right back to sleep and didn't give it another thought.

We packed lunches and took off to see waterfalls and then go on the pictured rocks cruise. We stopped at a road side overlook, it was hazy and so breezy. The breeze kept the temperature down considerably, it was almost cool but since we were doing some walking it just felt good. We stopped at another Michigan Welcome Center and had another really good experience. The man was so helpful. The information I had on the waterfalls in Munising had at best sketchy directions and we wanted to get a better idea where we were going. He pulled out a map, made some circles and got us going in the right direction. We were able to go to four different waterfalls; Wagner Falls, Alger Falls, Munising Falls, and Miners Falls. We got to Wagner Falls first, it was so beautiful. As soon as I got some photos I couldn't wait to get on to the next one. Next up was Alger Falls, this one we drove right past the first time. It was literally along the side of the road. There was no walking to it, nothing. We didn't even have to get out of the car. There was a sign and a wide spot on the side of the road, then the falls were right there. It was so beautiful in it's simplicity. I think each one got better than the last.

After the falls we went to the Pictured Rocks viewing area. Steve looked over the edge and his hat flew right off his head. The wind gusts over the edge were so strong it almost took your breath away. The wind hadn't died down at all. As we were standing there looking over the edge we realized the white caps were really kicking up. We decided to contact the Pictured Rocks cruise people, we wanted to postpone the cruise. We tried calling, but we were in the middle of nowhere and the cell didn't work, so we went to their ticket office. As we got to the door a woman walking out was calling to her husband telling him they had cancelled the cruise. PERFECT!!! We wanted to do it tomorrow when the winds die down, hopefully at least. Tomorrow will be our last chance so it better work out, after seeing the Miners Castle Picture Rocks overlook there is no way I want to miss this cruise.

We had the best day. Enjoy the pictures. I'll let you know how much we enjoyed the cruise tomorrow, but it's going to be late. The cruise starts at 7:30 PM, it is a 2-2 1/2 hour cruise, and it is an hour drive back to the campground.
