Day 73

Great Plains Zoo
Jul 18, 2013, 5:05 PM

This morning we paid a visit to the Great Plains Zoo. Once again we ended up on the zoo's doorstep without any prior planning. Last time we were a half a mile from a zoo where we camped, this time we were a mile from the zoo. We have really lucked out. The Great Plains Zoo was a nice little zoo and Steve got the opportunity to make a new friend. We were glad the zoo was small, we wanted to go to the Falls Park too. We only had today to do our sightseeing in Sioux Falls. I was afraid it was going to be a horrible day, the heat was going to be in the 90's and it was hot, but there was a breeze blowing that was more like a howling wind, so it didn't feel all that bad. After the zoo we found a place where we were able to wash the car, and when I say we I mean Steve. For some reason this time the car was really horrible from being towed. After that we had lunch in a place Steve had eaten before when he came to town for work. It was a nice Mexican restaurant. Lunch was really good.

Then on to the Falls Park. There is a lot of construction going on in the area and we had to take detours to get to the park. The Falls Park is in the middle of the downtown area. It wasn't what I was expecting and that is something I'm learning on this trip, my expectations can be so wrong. I was expecting a river to flow through the town and maybe a small falls at some point, but this was beautiful. The rocks were piled up all over and the water tumbled in several places. It almost looked like it had been constructed that way, not being a natural occurrence. If the day was a little cooler it would have been a great place to walk around and spend some time, but as it was we took some photos, went up a Visitor Center Lookout Tower, then we took a trolley ride to see historic downtown. While we were on the trolley, we had to stop for a train at a train crossing. There were no gates at the crossing. we were in the downtown area, so it wasn't like it would be a low traffic area. As we were driving back to the RV I watched and every railroad crossing I saw had no gate. People are very different out here.

It was a great day again! Tomorrow we are off to Rapid City, we have already booked our bus tour for Mt. Rushmore. That will be Monday. We will spend Saturday and Sunday doing other area attractions. I can't wait!!!!! Have a good night and enjoy the photos.
