Day 66

Naked And Afraid

Jul 11, 2013, 6:10 PM

Now that got your attention didn't it? Last night I was taking the pillows and comforter off the bed, this is a nightly process, and then I put the TV on. I can't go to sleep without the TV. When I did, what did I see but two bare naked asses. A woman and a man. I almost fell over. What the heck was this show? We have had cable TV so little on this trip so far, in Cedarville we had I think eight or twelve broadcast channels, but it was just the same three or four channels repeating themselves, so I've forgotten how crazy cable channels can be. On the Discovery channel at 11:30 came this show "Naked And Afraid", can you believe this? The premise of the show, as far as we could ascertain, was two survivalists are in the Serengeti naked and they have to last some length of time, or make it to a designated location, I don't know. Trust me when I tell you we didn't watch it long enough to gain a full understanding. I was so freaked out just seeing the two bare asses I had to tell Steve to change channels in the living room and check this out. The both of us stood there dumbfounded. There we are watching these two idiots walk through the African Plains NAKED!! They are rolling around in a mud puddle, NAKED (oh when I think of the things that could crawl into places - OH MY GOD!!). They were building a fire, NAKED!!! What is wrong with the entertainment industry that they think this is appropriate television. BRING BACK LEAVE IT TO BEAVER, FATHER KNOWS BEST, HAZEL, MY THREE SONS, oh I could go on and on, but no we get Dancing With The Stars (their not stars, they are washed up has beens), America's Got Talent (most of them don't), Survivor (who cares if they survive), The Bachelor (really this is how you're going to pick the person you spend the rest of your life with), oh and the dreaded Kardashians and Honey BooBoo (come on, people this isn't entertainment, it's broadcast voyeurism).

So I think that covers last night. Today we visited a couple more waterfalls. We went to the Horseshoe Falls which was the prettiest one of the group. The Horseshoe Falls must be on private land because they have you go though a gift shop, how disneyesk, then you have to pay to get in. No biggie, it was only a couple bucks, but the fee seemed to greatly reduce the crowds. It makes sense, there are so many waterfalls to see in the area why bother with one that wasn't free, but I'm so glad we did. It was just Steve and I and this beautiful waterfall. As we walked up to the water fall we were at the level of the creek at the bottom of the falls. You walk up and the falls are above you and you are surrounded by 30' rock wall in front of you and it sort of curves around you so you are kind of in a bowl. It was lush with foliage and quiet and the water was falling and then tumbling over rocks down the creek, it was magical. I am so glad we didn't miss that one.

From the Horseshoe Falls we went to the Michigan Nature Association Memorial Falls, this one was just crazy, you drive up a residential street, park your car along what just looks like an undeveloped piece of land on the opposite side from the houses, and there is a sign, you almost miss it, for the MNA Memorial Falls. Not more then a couple hundred feet from the street there is a waterfall that is so cool. There wasn't a tremendous amount of water going over the fall, but with time this fall had cut such a gorge into the rock. There was absolutely no rail or anything here and it dropped off about 50'. Trying to get a good photo required taking your life into your hands and sorry guys I wasn't willing to do that, so although I got a few photos, I'm sure they aren't going to do this justice at all. It is a sight I hope I never forget, but I have a feeling by the end if this trip my ears will be leaking with all of the images I have stored in my head, I may need another terabyte drive too for all the pictures I'm going to have to store, Steve is going to kill me!! It amazes me that here in Munising there aren't people falling all over each other trying to see these sights and there aren't safety barriers and admission fees making it a circus. There have been people we have passed or seen at most places but some are so empty it's really surprising.

We tried to get to Mosquito Falls but that was a big mistake. That trail wasn't anywhere near as nice as some of the others, no scratch that, the Mosquito Falls trail was the worst one we'd tried to do. We probably didn't leave enough time to do it and that might have been part of the problem, but we aren't billy goats and that's what this trail really needed. We got about 85% (someone told us that's how close we were) there and I could see two other people ahead of us and the woman was having trouble and I could see why given the terrain and I knew I could get up the hill, but I wasn't real sure I could get back down that hill and the Mosquitos were biting right through the Off!! It wasn't a fun hike at all. We went back!!! I hated going that far only to turn around but I wasn't going to risk my camera equipment, we didn't want to miss our sunset cruise, and we didn't want to have to rush dinner. Oh well!!! We have done so many other ones, I am not complaining!!!! I am really happy with the level of adventure we have been taking on. No stick in the mud here boy let me tell you!!!!

We are almost back at the campground and I haven't even gotten to tell you about then Pictured Rocks Sunset Cruise. It was fabulous. Michigan is a great state and Munising and this area are a jewel. Since we are going to be traveling tomorrow, I think I will stop here for the night and tell you all about the Sunset Cruise tomorrow. I'll give you the pictures tomorrow too, I'm beat and so looking forward to slipping under those soft, quiet sheets and sleeping. Good night!!!!
