Day 31

Driving To North Carolina :-(

WOW! I know I am spoiled and I rather like it that way, but boy oh boy I am really spoiled when it comes to travel. We left right when we planned at 8 AM, so we have only been in the car for two hours and I'm already miserable. We typically don't go much more than two hours in the car. I have to pee, I want something to munch on, I am uncomfortable, I WANT MY RV. no worries, we'll be there in another six hours.

It has been raining, actually pouring pretty much nonstop since before we were out of Pennsylvania. We stopped in Natural Bridge, Virginia for lunch at the Pink Cadillac. It was right off the highway and I think that says it all right there. We were greeted at the door by a waitress with a very un-natural shade of red hair, but who am I to criticize your choice of Crayola Hair Dye. She asked us how many, now I'm miserable and on my best days I always want to make a smart reply to that question, but today I really had to hold my tongue. I wanted to tell her 12, don't you see them, they are standing right in front of you. But some people look at you like you're crazy when you do that. The place as the name implies is 50's themed, we sat in the Elvis Room. The place could and should have been really upbeat and cheery but sadly no. It was dimly lit and looked shabby, I thought if they would just make it brighter it would be so much more pleasant. Maybe it was the dreary day that made it worse than it was, but I doubt it. The food wasn't bad, but that's as far as I'll go. When I went to use the restroom before we left I realized why they don't make the room brighter. The room you had to walk through to get to the restroom was decorated like a soda shop and it was much more brightly lit, it didn't help. You could see the place needed a good cleaning, painting, and just overall upgrade, so maybe the dim lights in the Elvis Room were a blessing. Oh and let me tell you about the restroom. It was garishly pink even by my standards, and that's saying something, but the best part of all was the broken mini blind slats in the window right next to the toilet. Anyone standing on the side of the building had a perfect view into the ladies restroom. OMG!!!!! Oh the joys of traveling by car. I can't wait to see what is in store for us next.

Well don't you know, we didn't have to wait long before there was excitement on the road. We are driving along, oh and by the way, it always amazes me how many people driving in pouring rain are doing it without their lights on. Typically too, it's the ones that are in the cars the color of the road surface or something that blends into either the rain or the water being kicked up off the road. You know what I mean, gray, white, silver, black, sometimes I think people go out of their way to be stupid. Anyway, the traffic just came to a complete and total stop. Some very special people used their personal lane to get around the traffic, to the majority of us the shoulder of the road is where you coast your car when it breaks down or if you get a flat, but for a select and exclusive few it becomes a personal lane that allows them to avoid traffic the rest of us must endure. How special you must be, oh you privileged few. We never did figure out what stopped traffic and thank God it wasn't for long before we were back moving again.

We met up with the parents of the graduate and we had a really nice dinner at Shatley Springs. It is one of those places where they serve you family style. Really good!!!! We talked and laughed and had a nice evening, but now we are back to the hotel. OH I forgot to tell you about the hotel. You just aren't going to believe this. We are in West Jefferson, North Carolina and the Hampton Inn is costing us about $150/night. THERE IS NOTHING HERE, so you would think the room will be killer. You'd be wrong. There is a bed, a chest of drawers with a TV on it, and a table to use as a desk. That's it!!!!!! What the hell is this about. Oh well whatever, the nice thing someone else will be making the bed tomorrow. YES!!!!!!!
