Day 45

Columbus Zoo

Jun 20, 2013, 6:48 PM

Today we got to go to the Columbus Zoo. We were barely inside the gate when I was already disappointed. We drove up to the gate and had to pay to park, OK whatever, but then trying to get tickets was a zoo (ha ha). There are so many choices to make when getting tickets people were taking forever. We finally got inside so we went into the first gift shop to get our pin, we have developed a pattern, as soon as we go in the first stop is to get a pin. They didn't have any nice pins! Come on, the Nations foremost zoo and they don't have nice pins. They had the lapel pins, they had animals on them and the name of the zoo in teeny tiny print, but no nice pins with just the zoo name or at least the zoo name written large enough that you can read it. We searched and searched and then asked an employee who searched the same area we did, then she went to a computer and looked at a screen or two, then she went into the back room. Now I know I can be dense at times, but I really thought she was looking for pins for me, sadly no, she came back after a long time and gave me a strange look when I asked her if she found any in the back. She hadn't been looking for pins at all. I have no idea what she was doing, but she wasn't giving me customer service. All Steve and I could come up with was a button. You know the kind, plastic covering over a picture with a pin in the back, but it said Columbus Zoo so what the heck. Steve went to pay and he gave the girl our Philadelphia Zoo membership card and the girl told him they don't give discounts, you get a discount for parking and admission. Now wait just one minute, we asked when we got to the parking lot, that girl said no parking discount. So we went to talk to Customer Relations. The guy in there was really nice but he said they don't give any discount but the one for admission. Gee thanks!

So now we have spent quite a bit of time chasing our tail (another animal reference, I'm on a roll). Let's start seeing things. Easier said than done. I can't make out their map for love nor money. Come on now, I'll give you the money to park, the pain in the butt to get tickets, the poor selection of souvenir pins, but can't you make the map a little easier to use. REALLY!!!!!! Ugh, being the trooper I am, I just silently sucked it up and plastered a smile on my face and went on. Oh my God, that was funny!!! I'm a comedian now! Oh gosh that was so funny, I'm still laughing. Anyway, moving on, I gave Steve the map, told him to figure out where we were going, and I just started taking pictures.

So we started in. After a short time Robert and Celeste called. They were just getting there and they wanted to know where we were. We really hadn't made it very far so they caught up quickly. It was so good to see Robert and Celeste. It's been 45 days since we left Florida and we have been missing the Happy Zone gang. Robert and Celeste had Tyler, Austin, and Stacy with them. Stacy is a virtual zoo guide. I guess they have visited the zoo a lot. It was great to be going around with someone that knew where they were going, and by extension we now know where we are going. THANK GOD, we can just put that map in a pocket.

We saw some interesting, weird, cute, gross, and funny things. There was a new baby gorilla, he was abandoned by his mother and a zoo keeper was taking care of him. It was cute to watch. There were adorable baby mountain goats. There was a kind of nearly hairless monkey. Oh that goes in the gross column. Also they had bats!!!! You know I hate bats. These guys were HUGE too. Freaked me out. I won't watch them. Steve stood there looking but not me. I put my hand up to shield my eyes and walked right past. I wasn't falling for that again. Those things give me the creeps. The boys got to touch a snake, they thought that was cool. There were chipmunks, groundhogs, moose, reindeer, bears, elephants, so many animals. The animals were all lazy today, I guess it was the heat. I was feeling lazy too, but I didn't just lay down in the shade.

It was a good day. The boys were so much fun. We got to hear about everything going on with them at the campground. We got to hear about things that I have no idea what they were talking about, but it was fun to hear about it. We had the best time walking around the zoo with all of them. I think we walked the entire zoo SEVERAL times, at least that is what it felt like. So when we got out we were done. The plan was to meet back up with Robert and Celeste, but they were beat too.

Tomorrow's plans may be up in the air, so I will just say good night and I guess we will all be surprised tomorrow.
